固体核磁共振（ssNMR）已经成为了研究蛋白结构的有力手段。但是传统的ssNMR依赖于13C的检测，需要10毫克级的同位素富集蛋白用于检测，同时固体样品中由于存在较强的分子间相互作用，会导致谱峰展宽，而魔角旋转（MAS）通过将核磁样品与静磁场方向摆成54.7°的夹角，使得固体分子可以模拟液体核磁中液体分子的高速运动，提高谱图分辨率，同时该技术和高灵敏度质子检测的集成可以进一步将样品量降低了一到两个数量级，因此可进一步推广ssNMR的使用。
当MAS旋转频率达到超快级别后，最初为较慢频率设计的方法便没有那么可靠。例如对原子分辨率蛋白的分析至关重要的13CA（α碳）-15N和13CO（羰基碳）-15N相关性。因此，作者开发了一种名为SPINE的方法，该方法在13C和15N通道上采用由四个复合脉冲组成的基本模块，9个转子周期，这些模块通过四步相位方案循环。该方法可以提升13C-15N的偏振转移并减少大约三分之二的实验时间。
随后，作者对SPINE的有效性进行了验证，在对多个蛋白的实验中，SPINE相比于传统方法均表现出了更好的分辨率并且可进一步提高灵敏度。
总之，本文作者开发了一种ssNMR方法，可以在超快转速下实现对13C-15N相互作用的分析。
